Punjabi Market Street Banners, 2023

The Punjabi Market banners, a collaborative effort between myself and Musqueam artist Chase Grey. Situated on the lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, our work weaves a narrative that contributes to the evolving architecture and urban ecosystem of the Punjabi Market. Through the banners, we celebrate the market, its community, and its people. My set of banners are inspired by the history of fabric and clothing stores. The banners showcase Phulkari and asterisk patterns, paying homage to the rich cultural heritage of the market. The Punjabi script proudly reads "Punjabi Bazaar," symbolically placing our language at the forefront of the market. Chase's banners are rooted in his Musqueam heritage. They honor the very land upon which they stand. Illustrating the significance of salmon as a keystone species and these banners highlight the integral role salmon play in sustaining life. Eagles as well, revered as rulers of the sky, hold a sacred place and symbolize strength, wisdom, knowledge, protection, and courage.

Our banners tell a collaborative story that intertwines the cultural narratives of both communities and is a dialogue for the diverse histories that converge in the Punjabi Market.
